On our last full day at camp before setting out on Expeditions, there was a great deal of energy and excitement mixed in with some nervousness and apprehension. Inspection was won by Dana, their first of the season. In chapel, the reading was the Good Samaritan and the topic of Mr. Michael’s sermon was kindness and consideration of others. We were reminded of the quote by Henry James: “three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.” Following a long rest was the first Camper Meeting, where Jet Easterly, Benjamin Davis, Crash Ackerly and Mathew Blandon were elected President, Vice President, Secretary and Grand Bouncer respectively. The camper body then voted on the official name for our new director as “Mr. Michael” (“Mr. Mike”,“Big Mike”, and “Mr. Mighty Mike” had all been contenders). After a rain-soaked cookout at the waterfront, the weather cooperated enough for us to be in Baird Hall for our first campfire singing of the season, followed by dorm Circles before Taps.
